What made you make the move into running your own business? –
The ability to help others and the flexibility it gave me to work around my family commitments.
What were the biggest challenges in the early days and how did you overcome these?
Dealing with red tape and practical issues that were not my speciality. I learned to delegate those challenges as the time it was taking me to do them was impacting on my own resources to run my business.
Did you ever feel like giving up and how did you overcome that?
Several times when others who I had trusted had let me down. I overcame these feelings by looking at what I was achieving, what more I had to offer and the stubbornness not to let others knock me down.
Was it difficult at times to balance family commitments and business commitments, and what are your tips for finding that balance?
It is always difficult to find a balance between family and business commitments, especially when you are like me and find it hard to say no! Making time in your schedule for reflection and for evaluation of where you are going and what is important to you is the biggest tip I can give to others. Always look at what each commitment is, if you love it, you will find time to schedule it in, if it is draining you, then ditch it. Breaking your day/week into segments is also a great way of finding balance and ensuring that you are able to do all that you want to do. As a small business owner it is vital that you do what you love every day.
What were the biggest mistakes you think you made?
I think our mistakes are our biggest learning curves so I embrace them all as examples of how I can improve myself personally and my business. Sometimes I have made a decision based on what is best for others, which in reality it was not the best decision for me personally but out of it I have learnt so much, therefore I can only be grateful.
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
Nothing, I have no regrets in life, each curve ball I have been dealt in business has led me to another avenue which has meant new and exciting opportunities.
What are the achievements you are most proud of?
In business, helping my clients achieve the success they desire. Speaking at the WEF conference in India, leading the way with social media and blogging locally before it became fashionable and raising the bar of personal development locally with our training business.
What do you think are the most important characteristics of successful business leaders?
A thirst for learning, humbleness, the strength of character, resilience and a sense of humour.
What is your favourite thing about being in business?
My favourite thing is that you get to help others become successful. Their challenges inspire me to be more creative in how we overcome the challenges presented. Their success inspires me to greater opportunities and personal satisfaction in their achievements.
What is your business dream and has the end game changed for you over the years?
My business dream is success for all, in whatever format that takes for you as an individual and for your business. Definitely, the end game has changed for me, and in reality, it continues to change as I grow my business and as a person. My own personal learning and development enable that to be the case.
Why did you join the GFSB and what are its greatest strengths?
I joined the GFSB as a member to promote my business and network with other businesses. I have joined the GFSB board to make a difference and to enable others to develop further so that we can all have success in our lives. Together we can make a difference.
